There are multiple causes for teeth stains, including coffee, tobacco, berries, and medications such as tetracycline. This common antibiotic is typically used to manage various bacterial infections. While it can successfully treat infections, it has been known to cause tooth discoloration, mainly yellow, brown, or gray stains, and primarily in children. Tooth stains from tetracycline can cause cosmetic concern and potentially weaken teeth.
At North Scottsdale Dental Studio, cosmetic dentists Dr. Todd Mabry, Dr. Colleen Murphy, and Dr. Peter Mpantas are dedicated to providing patients with their dream smile. They recognize how frustrating tooth discoloration can be, and offer treatments designed to rid your smile of those unwanted stains.
Teeth Whitening: Considered a safe and effective smile brightening treatment, professional teeth whitening is a common and popular option for many patients. It works by removing surface and deep-set stains and correcting discoloration. Teeth whitening is typically considered a convenient and simple treatment, and can lighten teeth by several shades. Our practice offers in-office Venus White® Max treatment and at-home options. Venus White® Max utilizes a whitening gel containing hydrogen peroxide gel and potassium nitrate that’s spread across the teeth. This approach usually requires three to four office visits. At-home treatments include individualized trays that are worn for the ideal period of time each day until desired results are achieved.
Porcelain Veneers: For more severe stains, porcelain veneers may be the preferred option. This cosmetic dental treatment can address tooth discoloration, as well as chips, gaps, and misalignment. Porcelain veneers are thin yet durable shells that are shaded to the natural color of your teeth. When bonded to the front of the tooth, the veneer can effectively conceal discoloration, ultimately hiding severe stains and other imperfections.
While teeth whitening methods can typically improve tetracycline stains, the treatment may not be able to completely remove the discoloration that often occurs. For this reason, many patients find veneers are the better option for achieving the flawless, white smile they desire.
